The first introductory session of Mindfulness for Schools was conducted at Gateway International College, Rajagiriya on 25 June 2014.
Over 100 students entering the Advanced Level at Gateway International College learned about the benefits of Mindfulness Meditation and its application in their lives. About 10 of their teachers were also present at that introductory program.
The program commenced with a detailed audio visual presentation out laying the historical path and the current developments relating to Mindfulness Meditation. The new research developments in Neuroscience relating to Mindfulness was also discussed. Later, the participants received a practical introduction to mindfulness through a guided meditation session and mindfulness exercises.
The session was conducted by an experienced practitioner of meditation, Aruna Manathunge. Aruna has practiced Buddhist meditation for over 40 years. He is a senior Lay student of Most Ven U Dhammajiva Maha Thero of Mitirigala Nissaranavanaya Forest Monastery.
He has also practiced under various teachers including Sayadaw U Pandita of Burma.
In recent years Aruna has closely followed the development of Mind Science and the Secular Mindfulness Meditation movement of the Western world.
