Sevitabbāsevitabba Sutta – English

Cromwell College, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia

Most Ven. U. Dhammajiva Maha Thero conducted a twelve days residential retreat on Sevitabbāsevitabba Sutta at Brisbane, Australia during December 2016. The retreat was held at Cromwell College belonging to the University of Queensland.

This retreat was primarily held in Sinhala medium. However, it also included brief Questions  and Answers sessions in English. These recordings are given in this page.

Sevitabbāsevitabba Sutta is from Majjhima Nikaya, Uparipannasaka, Anupada Vagga of Sutta Pitaka. This Sutta is based on an important dialogue between Lord Buddha and his Chief Disciple Maha Ven. Sariputta. The dialogue is about what is to be cultivated and what is not to be cultivated by those who like to have happiness and welfare. The Lord Buddha concludes the Sutta on the following note;

“Sāriputta, if all nobles understood thus the detailed meaning of my utterance, which I spoke in brief, it would lead to their welfare and happiness for a long time. If all brahmins…all merchants…all workers understood thus the meaning of my utterance, which I spoke in brief, it would lead to their welfare and happiness for a long time. If the world with its gods, its Māras, and it’s Brahmās, this generation with its recluses and brahmins, its princes and its people, understood thus the detailed meaning of my utterance, which I spoke in brief, it would lead to the welfare and happiness of the world for a long time.”

As such this Sutta contains invaluable advice to those who wish for happiness and welfare.
